In the Institute for Energy and Climate Research - Fundamentals of Electrochemistry (IEK-9), we perform research on highly relevant topics related to the energy transition. For example, we investigate new battery concepts and how we can turn the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) to the fuel of the future. The aim is to develop sustainable and cost-effective electrochemical systems with improved energy and power density, longer life time, and maximal safety. Your Job:

In March 2018 the so-called Living Lab Energy Campus (LLEC) project at Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ) was initiated in order to investigate future energy systems on the basis of decentralized and renewable energy. Making extensive use of instrumentation and implementation of data acquisition equipment, control systems, and demonstrator units, LLEC allows real-time analyses, design and optimization of renewable energy systems. Two large-scale battery energy-storage-systems (~2 MWh and ~500 kWh) are part of the demonstrator units, which are used for e.g. peak-shaving, uninterruptable power supply (UPS), and energy buffering. The goal of this subproject is to develop a simulation model (digital twin) of these large-scale battery energy-storage-systems. In this project your main tasks are:

  • Developing a simulation model for large-scale battery energy-storage-systems based on a holistic approach. This includes electrical, electrochemical, thermal, and ageing modelling
  • Optimizing and verifying the model based on the measurements
  • Determining efficiencies and the most efficient operating regimes
  • Collaborating with other institutes in the LLEC project to aim for an energy-optimal, cost-efficient and safe operation of the battery storage unit and finally total energy system
  • Writing scientific documents and presenting the results at meetings/conferences

Your Profile:

  • University degree (Master) and subsequent PhD degree in Electrical-, Mechanical-, or Automotive Engineering, or Physics
  • Strong knowledge of power electronics
  • Affinity towards modelling and simulation, preferably in connection with electric and electrochemical energy storage systems
  • Familiarity and experience with programming languages, such as MATLAB or Python
  • Experience in optimization and control engineering are valuable
  • Independent and result-oriented way of working
  • Strong ability to work in a team and with intern and extern partners
  • Flexibility and high commitment
  • Good communication skills in spoken and written English
  • Communication skills in spoken and written German is an advantage
