Offer Description

Are you passionate about cutting-edge materials research with real-world environmental impact? We’re looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our team at Chalmers University of Technology as part of an exciting EU-funded project focused on water purification.

About the department
The main competences at the Department of Industrial and Materials Science are found in the areas of:

  • Human-Technology Interaction

  • Form and Function

  • Modeling and Simulation

  • Product Development

  • Material

  • Production and in the interaction between these areas.

The research focuses on the development of the industrial process, from need to finished product while creating added value. To combine skills throughout the whole chain distinguishes the department both nationally and internationally. Here we gather internationally prominent researchers, in dynamic and outstanding research environments, as well as in national and international research networks.

About the research
The Division of Materials and Manufacture is part of the Department of Industrial and Materials Science. Our research spans the entire value chain of metallic materials — from materials design, processing, and characterization to machining.

We work with a broad range of manufacturing technologies, including:

  • Powder metallurgy

  • Electroplating

  • Additive manufacturing

  • Material removal processes

To support this, we employ advanced characterization techniques to understand and optimize material behavior.

Our work is interdisciplinary by nature and is addressing topics that have a direct impact on sustainability. The division is collaborating closely with other universities and research institutes and is implementing industry-academia partnerships through collaborative projects and strategic initiatives such as the National Competence Centre for Additive Manufacturing – Metal (CAM2) and the Chalmers Centre for Metal Cutting Research (MCR).

About the role
This postdoctoral researcher position in materials science is funded by a EU project related to water purification, with the following aims:

  • Chemical processing of novel 3D graphene composites.

  • In-depth structural characterization by advanced optical and electron microscopies.

  • Water filtration application of graphene-based composites for the removal of emerging organic contaminants and heavy metals.

Main responsibilities
Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform daily research activities in the lab in an independent way, possibly also supervising the activities of one or more PhD students.
You will develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of the research performed verbally and in writing in English.

The position may also include teaching on undergraduate and master's levels to a certain extent. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large.

Who we are looking for
The following requirements are mandatory:

  • To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must hold a doctoral degree in polymer chemistry, materials science, or related disciplines, awarded by an internationally recognized university no more than three years prior to the application deadline*.

  • You will need strong written and verbal communication skills in English

  • Practical abilities and inclination to work in a chemical lab, imagine and build new experimental setups, perform statistical analysis of experimental data.

  • You need to be highly motivated and work independently, with strong passion and good knowledge of chemistry and materials science.

  • Ability to disseminate scientific results, train and supervise PhD students.

You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.

*The date on your doctoral degree certificate is considered the official date of completion. Exceptions to the three-year eligibility limit may be made for documented circumstances such as parental leave, sick leave, or military service.

The following experience will strengthen your application:

  • Experience in synthesis of graphene composites, surface characterization of the synthesized materials using electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and other techniques.

All the skills mentioned above have to be clearly indicated in the application and confirmed, if possible, by supplementary documentation (PhD thesis, journal papers, course certificates, reference letters, etc.).

Contract terms

  • The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension.

  • The position requires physical presence throughout the entire employment. A valid residence permit must be presented by the start date, otherwise the offer may be withdrawn.

What we offer

  • As a postdoc at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy all employee benefits. Read more about working at Chalmers and our benefits for employees.

  • A dynamic and inspiring working environment in the coastal city of Gothenburg

  • Read more about Sweden’s generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, healthcare etc at Move To Gothenburg.
